Tuesday, July 18, 2006 10:50 p.m. YAY!!! E-beth went poopie on the potty!! Well...sort of... H noticed that E had been hiding when she pooped and had heard that was one of the signs that she may be ready for potty training. So, she went out and got a seat! Tonight I noticed a tell-tale look coming across her face (E's, not H's), so I scooped her up, raced to the bathroom, whipped off her diaper (already half-full), set her on her seat and then started grunting at her. A moment later she grunted and... Also, since I'm saving over $1,000 this year on life insurance (since I don't have to pay the premium to cover skydiving any more this year), and H needs a better camera for gown pics, we went in on a new camera together and have been playing around with it. Here are a few of the images so far... These are full-size, but I optimized them a bit for the web, but you can get an idea of the detail it gets...NICE!!! I went to see the back specialist today, and she said I'm healing great, 4 more weeks in the brace and then 2-3 months of rehab/physical therapy depending on the tests she gives me when the brace comes off. You can see the compression fracture in the x-ray below. The brace makes it look like I've got a bunch of metal in there, but that's all external. The compression fracture is in the L1 vertebrate, which is the third one down in the image. It's just above the handle of the brace and looks squashed on one side. She said it was about 30% shorter in height than it was, which isn't bad. She said I should make a full recovery and shouldn't suffer any future problems!! Lucky... Also, went down to the basement to get the battery charger tonight and noticed that the potatoes and sweet potatoes I stuck down there a few months ago (as an experiment in gardening) had sprouted like crazy!! Weird...
Monday, July 17, 2006 10:02 p.m. Finally got the pic scanned that a spectator took as I was coming in to land. I had just started my flare here and I was about a half-second away from realizing that I wasn't slowing down enough and was going to hit hard. You can see on the left side of my parachute where my line had broken, causing the canopy to not catch as much air and not provide the lift I needed. I also put up a few more classic e-videos. She just amazes us every day at how smart she is, how fast she's learning and how much we all laugh. She tries to say anything we say (which has made us pretty careful), she understands EVERYTHING we say, even if she doesn't always let on and she's taken to singing to us and counting (by tapping her finger on whatever is closest when we start saying "one, two...")... It seems like only yesterday that this was her. And, of course, the garden continues to explode!!!
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 11:27 p.m. Well, many of you may have heard about my little 'skydiving accident' and 'broken back.' Tough to have those phrases together without conjuring up horrible images, but I was very lucky and am glad things turned out as well as they did. The short version: I was having a wonderful day, got in some great skydives, and on my second opening, I broke a line on the front of my canopy. I had landed with a malfunction like this before, but it was on a windier day and I knew that landing had been hard. I tested the canopy control and it seemed to respond well enough to not cut away and use my reserve, but, when I came in for my landing and flared to slow myself down, my canopy didn't provide enough lift and I landed hard on my feet and then my butt. I've got a picture that was taken just before I landed that I'll get up as soon as I get it scanned. After a trip to the emergency room and lots of x-rays, I was told that I have an L1 compression fracture, it will take 4-6 weeks for the bone to heal, but may take anywhere from 3-6 months to strengthen the muscles and connective tissue and I should be back to normal. There's some videos below, and when I get Tim's perspective of the jumps, I'll put those up as well. You can see the difference in speed between the first landing and the second. And, of course, what everyone comes for...more e-video!!!
